Not news
Strangely shocked & saddened by this picture from the NYRB of 14th October, despite it not being new news, rather a very famous image. That such things could have happened so recently. According to Wikipedia, there was reconciliation in 1997 although one of her son's died a tragic death a few years later.# posted by Jim @ 4:40 AM

One should not be smug. I dare say there are plenty of pictures just as ugly as this one from the UK. Maybe some inoffensive gay being hounded by rough women from some rough housing estate on suspicion of committing child abuse. But there is a difference in scale. Such things do happen here but they are not usually, to used the current term, institutionalised.
